Viernes de Dolores 2027 — Our Lady of Sorrows Feast in Dolores Hidalgo

Dolores Hidalgo — the “Cradle of National Independence” — takes its name from Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows), and each year the town honors its patroness on Viernes de Dolores, the Friday before Palm Sunday. In 2027 the celebration falls on March 19.

A Town Named for the Virgin of Sorrows

The feast day is woven into the town’s identity. At the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores — the same church where Father Miguel Hidalgo rang the bell that launched Mexico’s independence in 1810 — the faithful gather for Mass and a solemn procession of the sorrowful Virgin through the centro histórico.

Monumental Altars and Street Hospitality

The signature of Viernes de Dolores is the altares monumentales — elaborate altars built in doorways, patios, and windows of homes throughout the historic center, honoring the Virgin of Sorrows. Visitors are welcomed with aguas frescas, paletas (ice pops), and nieve (fruit sorbet) offered freely by families — a gesture rooted in the tradition of offering “the tears of the Virgin” to passersby.
