Semana Santa — Holy Week — is the most solemn and visually stunning week of the year in San Miguel de Allende. From Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday, the city’s cobblestone streets become the stage for processions that blend deep Catholic devotion with centuries of local tradition. For visitors, it is both a spiritual pilgrimage and an unforgettable cultural spectacle.
Holy Week opens with a defining local tradition: the traída (bringing) of the revered image of the Señor de la Columna — the Lord of the Column — from the Santuario de Atotonilco, the UNESCO-listed sanctuary a short drive outside town. The statue is carried in procession back to San Miguel, a journey that draws thousands of faithful.
In 2027, Holy Week runs from Palm Sunday, March 21, through Easter Sunday, March 28. All processions are free and open to the public; many begin in the late afternoon and continue after dark. Hotels and restaurants fill early, so book accommodations well in advance. Dress modestly out of respect for worshippers, and expect street closures in the historic center throughout the week.
