The Rally Guanajuato México is Mexico’s round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), and it’s one of the most spectacular motorsport events in Latin America. Each March, the world’s best rally drivers descend on the state of Guanajuato for four days of high-speed racing through mountain gravel roads, colonial city streets, and — most famously — the underground tunnels of Guanajuato City.
Few WRC rounds can match the Rally Guanajuato México for sheer spectacle. The event combines classic gravel stages through the Sierra de Guanajuato with one of the championship’s most iconic special stages: a timed run through Guanajuato City’s historic mining tunnels. Cars blast through the narrow subterranean passages at over 150 km/h, the engine roar echoing off stone walls as thousands of spectators line the route above ground.
The ceremonial start takes place at the Alhóndiga de Granaditas in Guanajuato City, where drivers are introduced to the crowd before a parade through the centro histórico. Stages then fan out across the region, including the infamous El Brinco jump near León, where cars launch spectacularly over a crest with thousands of fans packed onto the hillsides. The rally typically draws over 500,000 spectators across its four days.
The Guanajuato City street stage (typically Friday evening) is the easiest to attend as a day-tripper from San Miguel de Allende. Arrive by mid-afternoon to find a good viewing spot along the tunnel exits or near the Alhóndiga. The atmosphere in the city that night is electric — bars and restaurants stay open late, and you’ll find rally fans from across the world filling the plazas.
For the gravel stages near León, plan to leave early and pack water, sunscreen, and a hat — the mountain stages offer little shade. The official WRC website publishes stage maps and spectator guides about two weeks before the event. This is the only WRC round in North America, drawing teams and fans from Europe, Japan, and across the Americas.
