One of the most solemn and enduring traditions of the San Miguel de Allende region is the Procesión del Señor de la Columna — the procession of Christ tied to the column — which has traveled between the Sanctuary of Atotonilco and San Miguel de Allende every year since 1812. It is a pilgrimage born of gratitude, and it marks the beginning of the region’s Holy Week observances.

The tradition began during an epidemic, when the image of the Señor de la Columna — a sculpted figure of Jesus bound and flogged at the pillar — was carried from Atotonilco to San Miguel to ask for relief. The plague subsided, and in thanksgiving the procession has been repeated every year since. Today, on the Saturday before Holy Week, the image travels from the sanctuary to San Miguel, returning to Atotonilco on the night of Holy Thursday.

The Sanctuary of Atotonilco

The sanctuary itself is reason enough for the visit. Known as the “Sistine Chapel of Mexico,” it is covered from vault to floor in the baroque murals of Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre, painted over a period of thirty years. The sanctuary and the town of San Miguel de Allende are jointly listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for the fusion of European and indigenous artistic traditions.

The Sanctuary of Atotonilco lies about 14 kilometers — a 20-minute drive — from San Miguel de Allende. In 2027, Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday on March 21, placing the departure of the procession on Saturday, March 13, and its return to Atotonilco on Holy Thursday, March 25. The event is free and open to all; visitors are welcome to observe the procession and the sanctuary’s masses respectfully. Dress modestly and be prepared for crowds of pilgrims, particularly as the image departs and returns.
