Las Iluminaciones 2026 — Guanajuato City Christmas Lights Festival
November 28, 2026 – December 31, 2026
From late November through the end of December, the already magical city of Guanajuato transforms into a glowing wonderland during Las Iluminaciones, the city’s annual Christmas lights festival. Just a 90-minute drive from San Miguel de Allende, this is one of the most enchanting day trips you can take during the holiday season.
What Are Las Iluminaciones?
Las Iluminaciones (The Illuminations) is Guanajuato City’s seasonal tradition of decorating its historic centro histórico with elaborate Christmas light displays. The entire UNESCO World Heritage district — from the Basílica Colegiata to the Teatro Juárez, through the winding callejones and across the plazas — is draped in millions of twinkling lights, creating a fairy-tale atmosphere unlike anything else in the Bajío region.
The festival traditionally kicks off in the last week of November and runs through the end of December, coinciding with the city’s Christmas festivities, posadas, and year-end celebrations. The official lighting ceremony usually draws thousands to the Plaza de la Paz.
What to See and Do
- Plaza de la Paz: The main square features the most elaborate display, with the Basílica as a dramatic backdrop
- Teatro Juárez: The iconic neoclassical theatre is outlined in lights, creating one of the most photographed scenes of the season
- Callejón del Beso: The famous Alley of the Kiss gets a romantic holiday makeover with overhanging lights
- Jardín de la Unión: This triangular plaza is filled with food stalls, live music, and a festive holiday market
- Presa de la Olla: The reservoir park is illuminated with floating light displays on weekends
Day Trip from San Miguel de Allende
Guanajuato City is approximately 90 minutes by car from San Miguel de Allende via Highway 110. The drive itself is scenic, winding through the Sierra de Guanajuato mountains. If you don’t have a car, buses run regularly from the San Miguel central bus station to Guanajuato’s terminal, with fares around 150-200 pesos each way.
The lights are best experienced after sunset (around 6:00 PM in November-December), so plan to arrive in the late afternoon, explore the city as dusk falls, enjoy dinner at one of the centro restaurants, and drive back after 9:00 PM. The city is safe to walk at night, especially in the illuminated centro area.
