Festival Vive Alterno Cervantino (FIVAC) 2026 in Guanajuato City

October 8, 2026 – October 26, 2026

While the world-famous Festival Internacional Cervantino (FIC) fills Guanajuato’s theatres and concert halls each October, an equally vibrant parallel universe unfolds in the city’s plazas and streets. The Festival Vive Alterno Cervantino (FIVAC) is the grassroots, free-spirited counterpart to the main Cervantino festival — and for many visitors, it captures the true soul of Guanajuato during festival season.

What Is FIVAC?

FIVAC (Festival Vive Alterno Cervantino) is an independent, community-organized arts festival that runs concurrently with the official Cervantino program in October. Founded as an alternative to the increasingly institutional and ticketed main festival, FIVAC brings theatre, music, dance, circus arts, poetry, and performance art directly to the public — for free, in open-air venues across Guanajuato City.

The festival’s main hub is the Plaza de los Ángeles, a large public square near the city center that transforms into a bustling stage with multiple performance areas. Additional pop-up performances happen spontaneously in callejones, plazuelas, and on the iconic steps of the University of Guanajuato.

What to Expect

  • Street theatre and clowning: Performers from across Mexico and Latin America bring physical comedy, acrobatics, and interactive street shows
  • Live music: Everything from traditional son jarocho to experimental electronica, with a strong emphasis on emerging Mexican artists
  • Circus and fire arts: Jugglers, fire spinners, and aerialists perform into the night at Plaza de los Ángeles
  • Artisan market: Local craftspeople sell handmade jewelry, clothing, prints, and festival memorabilia
  • Food stalls: Affordable street food — tacos, tortas, elotes, and aguas frescas — keeps the crowds fueled

The atmosphere is bohemian, youthful, and unpretentious. Unlike the formal, seated events of the main Cervantino, FIVAC is participatory and spontaneous — you might find yourself pulled into an impromptu dance circle or handed a prop during a street theatre sketch.

Day Trip from San Miguel de Allende

Guanajuato City is approximately 90 minutes from San Miguel de Allende by car. During Cervantino season (October 8-26, 2026), the city is at its most electric — and you can experience both the official Cervantino and FIVAC in a single day trip. Attend a ticketed Cervantino performance in the afternoon, then wander into Plaza de los Ángeles as FIVAC comes alive after dark.

Buses from San Miguel’s central station to Guanajuato run regularly and cost around 150-200 pesos. Note that during Cervantino, accommodations in Guanajuato City book up months in advance, so a day trip from SMA is often the most practical option.

Practical Information

  • Dates: October 8–26, 2026 (concurrent with the Festival Internacional Cervantino)
  • Location: Plaza de los Ángeles and various public spaces, Guanajuato City Centro
  • Cost: Free admission to all FIVAC events
  • Best time to go: Evenings after 6:00 PM for the full street festival atmosphere; weekends are busiest
  • Weather: October evenings in Guanajuato are mild (10-15°C); a light jacket is recommended

FIVAC is proof that you don’t need a ticket to experience world-class culture during Cervantino. If you’re planning a day trip from San Miguel de Allende to Guanajuato in October, make sure the alternative festival is on your radar.
