Fiesta de la Purísima Concepción en Dolores Hidalgo 2026

From November 28 through December 8, the town of Dolores Hidalgo honors the Immaculate Conception with one of the region’s most distinctive religious traditions: the Fiesta de la Purísima Concepción, centered on the Templo de la Tercera Orden and known above all for its ceras — enormous candles carried in nightly procession by the town’s trade guilds.

The celebration traces its roots to the town’s colonial guilds, each of which took responsibility for a night of devotion. Today that heritage lives on in the candlelit processions, when members of each gremio — bakers, shoemakers, potters, and others — walk through the historic center carrying towering candles, accompanied by serenatas performed by live musical groups.

What to Expect

  • Nightly ceras candle processions led by the town’s guilds
  • A great popular fair with antojitos mexicanos
  • Serenatas and live music each evening
  • Exhibition of traditional wax figures by local artisans
  • Fireworks (quema de juegos pirotécnicos)

The fair that surrounds the temple is a highlight in itself, filling the surrounding streets with the aromas of antojitos — quesadillas, tamales, buñuelos, and atole — alongside carnival games and vendors selling local crafts. Dolores Hidalgo is famous for its painted ceramics, and the fiesta is an excellent moment to see artisans at work and buy directly from them.

Practical Information

Dolores Hidalgo is about a 45-minute drive from San Miguel de Allende, making the evening processions an easy round trip. The event is free, family-friendly, and safe to explore on foot. The processions begin after nightfall, so bring a light jacket for the cool highland evenings. Visitors are welcome to watch the ceras processions and enjoy the fair — it is a rare chance to witness a centuries-old guild tradition that has all but disappeared elsewhere in Mexico.
