August 8, 2027
In San Miguel de Allende, devotion to the Virgen de la Concepción has its own local heartbeat. While the universal Catholic Church observes the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception in December, the faithful of San Miguel traditionally celebrate the Virgin at the Templo de la Inmaculada Concepción — better known as Las Monjas — on August 8.
Las Monjas (“the nuns”) is one of San Miguel’s most photographed churches. Built for the Conceptionist order between the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries, its soaring dome and neoclassical interior anchor the corner of Canal and Hernández Macías, just steps from the Jardín Principal. The church remains a quiet, luminous sanctuary in the busy heart of the centro.
The August date reflects a distinctly local custom. While December 8 marks the universal Catholic solemnity, San Miguel’s faithful have long honored the Virgin at Las Monjas in midsummer — a tradition tied to the church’s own history and the devotion of the Conceptionist community that built it. Visitors can experience both moments of the year, but the August celebration carries an intimate, neighborhood character that feels uniquely San Miguel.
Inside, the church is equally striking, with a richly decorated altar and a soaring dome that has made Las Monjas a favorite subject for photographers and a landmark for visitors navigating the centro’s winding streets.
The celebration is free and open to all, regardless of faith. Las Monjas is located at Canal and Hernández Macías in the historic center, an easy walk from the Parroquia. Arrive early for the morning Mass, and take time to admire the church’s architecture and the altar adorned for the feast.
