October 10, 2026 – November 2, 2026
Each autumn, as Día de Muertos approaches, the city of León fills with color and sugar. The Feria del Alfeñique is one of Guanajuato’s most beloved seasonal fairs — a celebration of the region’s confectionery artistry where artisans shape sugar paste into calaveritas (sugar skulls), fruit, and intricate figures. Just a 90-minute drive from San Miguel de Allende, it makes an easy and memorable day trip.
Alfeñique is a traditional sugar-paste craft with roots in Spain and the Arab world, brought to Mexico during the colonial era. Over centuries it became inseparable from Day of the Dead: families place alfeñique skulls and sweets on ofrendas as offerings to loved ones. Each figure is hand-molded and painted, making the fair as much a showcase of folk art as a market.
León is the leather-and-shoe capital of Mexico, but in October it reveals a sweeter side. The Feria del Alfeñique turns the historic center into an open-air celebration of craftsmanship, where families shop for the ofrendas that will welcome their departed on Día de Muertos. For visitors staying in San Miguel de Allende, it is a chance to experience one of the region’s most authentic seasonal traditions without the crowds of a major festival.
The 2026 edition runs from October 10 through November 2 in León’s historic center, with stalls generally open from around 9:00 am to 10:00 pm. Entry is free. To reach León from San Miguel de Allende, drive or take a bus via the Querétaro–León route — the trip takes roughly an hour and a half. Pair the fair with a walk through León’s zócalo and a visit to the Expiatorio church for a full day out.
