March 20, 2027 – April 5, 2027
For three weeks each spring, Guanajuato City trades its colonial elegance for the pageantry of the Middle Ages. The Festival Medieval de Guanajuato transforms the centro histórico into a Renaissance fair of jousting tournaments, artisan markets, street performers, and period costume parades that draw families and history enthusiasts from across the Bajío region.
The festival runs from late March through early April, filling the plazas and alleyways of Guanajuato City with the sights and sounds of a European medieval fair. The centerpiece is the jousting tournament, where armored knights on horseback compete in tests of skill before cheering crowds. Surrounding the main arena, you’ll find an expansive artisan market selling handmade leather goods, forged metalwork, medieval-style garments, and traditional foods like roasted meats, fresh bread, and spiced wine.
Street performers — jugglers, fire-eaters, lute players, and fortune tellers — wander through the crowds, creating an immersive atmosphere. On weekends, a costume parade winds through the centro histórico, with participants dressed as knights, princesses, monks, and peasants. The festival is family-friendly, with dedicated children’s areas featuring puppet shows, archery lessons, and craft workshops.
The Festival Medieval offers a completely different flavor from San Miguel’s own cultural calendar. Where SMA’s festivals lean toward fine arts, chamber music, and religious traditions, this is pure festive escapism — a chance to eat roast meat off a wooden board, watch a knight in armor charge down a makeshift lists, and browse stalls selling handmade leather goods in the shadow of the Basílica Colegiata.
Weekends are the best time to visit, when the full program of events is running. Combine your trip with lunch at one of Guanajuato’s traditional mercado fondas or a visit to the Diego Rivera Museum for a well-rounded day trip. The spring weather in Guanajuato is ideal — warm days and cool evenings perfect for wandering the city’s famously colorful streets.
