Cervantino Callejero del CLETA 2026 — Free Street Theatre in Guanajuato City

The Festival Cervantino Callejero del CLETA returns to Guanajuato City in October 2026, running concurrently with the prestigious Festival Internacional Cervantino. Organized by the Centro Libre de Experimentación Teatral y Artística (CLETA), this grassroots street theatre festival transforms the plazas and staircases of Guanajuato’s historic center into open-air stages — and every performance is completely free.

What to Expect

Unlike the ticketed mainstage productions of the Cervantino, the Callejero is raw, spontaneous, and deeply political. CLETA was founded in 1973 at UNAM and has roots in Latin America’s teatro popular movement — theatre by the people, for the people. Expect powerful street performances tackling themes of social justice, identity, and Mexican culture, performed by troupes from across Mexico and Latin America.

The festival’s main hub is the Plaza San Fernando and the iconic escalinatas (staircases) of the University of Guanajuato, where impromptu performances spill onto the steps throughout the three weeks of Cervantino.
